Like everyone else, my Facebook feed lit up last week with shares and reshares of the well known Kony 2012 video. While it was extremely heartening to see so many people get really excited and concerned about it, it was very discouraging to see all of this go towards a charity/movement that has serious problems.
It would be easy to get discouraged by this and not donate to a worthy cause at all. After all, if one organization is willing to make an emotionally manipulative message to push their shady agenda, isn’t it possible that the rest are too? It would be terrible if all of this positive energy would be put at a full stop, when it was shown that a large group of people in the US and indeed, across the world, really wants to affect positive change.
Below I’ve listed a few great charities and organizations that you should consider donating money and volunteering time to instead of Invisible Children. If you want to help contribute to make the world a better place, these are some good places to start.
This is just a handful of great organizations doing good work across the world. You can also consider donating to a cause that means something more specific to you, such as in animal rights, LGBTQ rights, environmental issues, and so on.
One of the best things you can do is make positive change directly, not through your wallet, and volunteer either abroad or locally. You can always check for folks looking for local volunteers here. Plenty of jobs grant extra days off to be used towards volunteer work, so double check with your boss if you’re interested.
It’s awesome that you want to make the world a better place, don’t get discouraged by one bad charity.

Joe also began to entertain on stage during his younger years at the Teen Club from Holy Trinity Church. They had a grade school with a theater stage. I believe we sang “Heart of My Hearts” capella. He fell in love and married a lovely young lady named Vicky. Alas, the bubble burst, Joe learned new heartache, and life goes on.
